The Alabama Left-Handed Golf Association ALHGA was founded in 1950 by Max Mosley. Max could not have known when he got together some of his fellow left-handed golfers for a friendly round that the ALHGA would evolve from that day. Since 1950 the ALHGA has held the Alabama Left-Handed State Tournament each year and has crowned the State of Alabama Left-Handed Champion each of those years. The ALHGA has held other events such as Lefty-Right tournaments occasionally throughout the years.

Membership in the ALHGA is open to all Alabama residents that play golf left handed. Membership is currently $25.00 per year. Being a member entitles a left handed golfer an invitation to the annual state tournament, any other tournaments sponsored by ALHGA and the ALHGA newsletter.

ALHGA tournaments in the past have had in excess of 100 lefties on a course during the state tournament. The state tournament is moved to different locations around Alabama each year with usually no more than 3 consecutive tournaments at any one course. The state tournament is a flighted tournament, with the winner of the championship flight being awarded with the state left-handed championship trophy pictured on the first page of the ALHGA website. The trophy is a rotating trophy with the champion keeping it for the year until the next state tournament. The trophy has the names of the each annual champion engraved on the base.

The remaining flights are filled based on the scores from rounds on Friday and Saturday with the final round on Sunday determining the champion and the winners of the other flights. Currently flights included are for Championship, Championship B, Open A, Open B, Senior, and Super Senior. The senior flight is for Alabama left-handed golfers age 60-69 and the Super Senior flight is for those 70 and above. Each flight plays from the appropriate tees with the championship flight playing from the further tees and the senior flight from the up tees. Generally, each flight has trophies and cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers.
